About Us

A Decade of Leading Medication Expertise in Australian Insurance

IMM was founded by directors with over a decade of experience at the intersection of clinical pharmacy, insurance, and injury management. We help insurers and claims teams make confident, evidence-based decisions about medication in personal injury claims.

"Medication is one of the most significant, yet most overlooked, factors in injury claim outcomes. We built IMM to give insurers the independent pharmacy expertise they need to make confident, evidence-based decisions."

Our Directors

Built From the Ground Up

Independent Med Management was founded on a clear observation: medication is one of the most significant, yet often overlooked, factors in injury claim outcomes. Prescribing cascades, drug interactions, inappropriate medication use, and unchecked polypharmacy too often lead to adverse effects, secondary conditions, prolonged incapacity, and escalating claim costs for insurers and scheme agents.

Our directors identified this gap early. Over the past decade, they have built IMM into a trusted, specialist provider operating at the intersection of clinical pharmacy and insurance claims management. We are focused exclusively on delivering independent pharmacy opinions and medication management services for the Australian personal injury sector.

Our goal has always been to provide insurers, claims managers, and rehabilitation providers with the expert medication insight they need to make confident, defensible decisions, while ensuring injured workers and claimants are supported with safe, appropriate pharmacotherapy that aids their recovery and supports return-to-work outcomes.

Why Medication Expertise Matters in Insurance Claims

Medication-related risk is one of the most common yet least visible contributors to poor claim outcomes, increased treatment costs, and delayed return to work. Without structured pharmacy oversight, these issues compound across the life of a claim.

Prescribing Cascades

New medications prescribed to treat the side effects of existing ones, creating a cycle of unnecessary pharmaceutical complexity that drives up treatment costs and delays recovery milestones.

Drug Interactions

Medications from multiple prescribers that interact with each other, often going undetected, leading to adverse drug reactions, hospitalisation, and increased claim liability for insurers.

Inappropriate Prescribing

Medications that are not clinically appropriate for the injury, the claimant, or the stage of recovery, including ongoing use of opioids and other high-risk drugs without adequate clinical review or justification.

Secondary Conditions & Adverse Effects

Unmanaged medication risk that contributes to new health conditions such as sedation, cognitive impairment, falls, and dependency, extending claim duration and reducing return-to-work outcomes.

This is where IMM steps in.

We provide independent, pharmacist-led expertise that identifies medication-related risk early, delivers clear and defensible recommendations to insurers, and where required, actively manages medication optimisation through structured engagement with treating providers.

Working across every state and territory

Workers' Compensation and CTP legislation varies significantly across Australian jurisdictions. Our team has deep experience navigating the regulatory frameworks and scheme requirements of every state and territory, ensuring our recommendations are always jurisdiction-appropriate and defensible.

Workers' Compensation

Supporting statutory insurers, self-insurers, and scheme agents across all state-based Workers' Compensation schemes, from early intervention and medication risk identification through to complex, long-tail claim management.

Compulsory Third Party (CTP)

Providing medication oversight for CTP motor accident claims where prescribing patterns, treatment reasonableness, and medication risk directly influence claim strategy and settlement considerations.

Invested in Our Pharmacists, Committed to Quality

The quality of our services starts with the people who deliver them. We take a deliberate, long-term approach to building our pharmacy team, because consistent, high-quality reporting depends on pharmacists who are properly trained, fully supported, and deeply embedded in the work they do.

Comprehensive Industry Training

Every pharmacist who joins IMM completes a structured, three-month training program comprising over 480 hours of industry-specific education covering insurance legislation, claims workflows, clinical governance, and evidence-based reporting methodology. This is supplemented by ongoing professional development to ensure our team stays current with evolving regulatory requirements and clinical best practice.

Full-Time, Dedicated Team

Our pharmacists work full-time for IMM rather than on a contractual basis. While managing a permanent team through the natural fluctuations in referral volumes that come with this industry can be challenging, we believe this is the best way to deliver consistent, quality-controlled reporting and services to our customers.

Fully Accredited and Insured

All IMM pharmacists are AHPRA-registered, hold current professional indemnity insurance, and operate under our clinical governance framework. Our customers can engage our services with confidence, knowing that every pharmacist delivering their reports meets the highest standards of professional accreditation and accountability.

Ongoing Development

Training does not stop after onboarding. Our pharmacists participate in regular peer review, case-based learning, and continuing professional development aligned to the insurance and injury management sectors. This ensures that the quality of our work improves continuously as our team grows.

How We Work

We have refined our approach over more than a decade to deliver consistent, high-quality outcomes at scale without compromising on clinical rigour or turnaround times.

1

Evidence-Based Clinical Methodology

Every pharmacy opinion and recommendation is grounded in current clinical evidence, Australian prescribing guidelines, and established pharmacological principles. Each case is assessed individually on its clinical merits and claims context.

2

Structured Clinical Governance

Our pharmacists complete over 480 hours of industry-specific training before working on live insurance claims. Ongoing peer review and clinical governance frameworks ensure quality and consistency across every report and recommendation.

3

Actionable, Defensible Reporting

Our reports are written for claims teams and technical officers, not clinical audiences. We deliver clear, jargon-free recommendations that can be actioned immediately, supported by the clinical reasoning required for defensible claims decision-making.

4

Hands-On Medication Management

Where medication risk requires active management, our pharmacists engage directly with treating practitioners to coordinate medication optimisation. We do not just identify problems; we work with prescribers and care teams to resolve them.
