MCMP: Cracking the Code

Managing Medicinal Cannabis Requests in Workers Compensation and CTP Claims.

Medicinal Cannabis Process

Some Case Managers are experiencing uncertainty about when to refer for an IMM Primary Assessment versus an Medicinal Cannabis Management PROGRAM (MCMP). Below is a brief explanation to clarify the distinction.

If you have not yet decided to support the use of medicinal cannabis, we recommend referring to an IMM when medicinal cannabis funding is requested by the injured person or their physician. This assessment should be included as supporting documentation in the referral for an IME to ensure that the IME Physician has CURRENT, ACCURATE, and RELEVANT information on which to base their opinion.

If the IME supports the use of medicinal cannabis, the insurer should only approve funding for a 12-week trial period. This trial is to determine whether medicinal cannabis is an effective treatment option. At this stage, the MCMP is crucial and is highly recommended for ALL claims where the insurer has agreed to fund medicinal cannabis for a trial.

Are your claimants on medication aiding recovery?

Pain medications (pharmaceutical opioids) are responsible for more deaths and hospitalisations than heroin. Medication use is the most common intervention in healthcare. Refer your patient for an IMM medication review today to ensure your claimants are on the right treatments, supporting their effective recovery and return to health.
