IMM Turns 5: From Startup to National Leader
Five years after launching IMM, we now support every major personal injury insurer in Australia. Hereβs how medication risk oversight is evolving and what the next phase looks like.
5 Year IMM Anniversary
Five years ago Taylor and I (Luke) started Independent Med Management (IMM) started with a simple idea.
Medication was a major issue in personal injury claims. Some of the worst I have ever seen.
Everyone knew medications were influencing recovery, but no one had built a system to properly manage the risk. So we did. What started as a small idea has grown into something that is now genuinely changing how insurers, doctors, and claims teams think about medication risk. Over the past five years we have done a lot more than just grow a business.
We relocated from Newcastle to the Gold Coast and set up our office here. The team has grown several times. We have welcomed great people into the business, made some tough decisions when people were not the right fit, and said goodbye to valued team members who moved on to new chapters including relocations and maternity leave. We have also celebrated some great life moments together. Our first IMM baby arrived with Ireanβs Teddy, followed by our own baby Matty. And somewhere along the way two very loved golden retrievers (Harvey and Mia) also became part of the IMM story.
From a business perspective the growth has been incredible.
We started helping one team with GIO in Newcastle. Today IMM supports every major personal injury insurer in Australia.
In that time we have helped reduce high risk medication use across tens of thousands of claims. We have built strong trust with insurers across the country and now receive the majority of referrals across many providers and insurers.
Most importantly, we have created an entirely new role for pharmacists inside the personal injury system. Traditionally pharmacists worked in community or hospital roles. IMM has shown that pharmacists can sit inside the insurance ecosystem and directly influence recovery outcomes, medication safety, and claim decision making.
But the part I am most proud of is the team.
This work is not easy. Claims are complex. Insurance is unique. Medication profiles are messy. The conversations we have with doctors and claims teams can influence someoneβs recovery and their future.
Every report written. Every recommendation made. Every difficult clinical discussion with a treating doctor. Every file reviewed late in the afternoon when the brain is tired. That is what built this company.
But the real opportunity is what comes next.
The industry is only now beginning to understand how important medication oversight actually is.
Over the next phase we will see much wider adoption of these services across insurers. Medication risk identification will become routine, not optional.
With the implementation of AI risk assessments through AllMeds, identifying medication risk will become dramatically easier for our customers. What once took deep manual review will now be detected quickly and consistently, allowing our pharmacists to focus on where we create the most value.
We are also continuing to evolve everything around the business. New services. New processes. Updates to our website. New fee structures. New contracts. All designed to scale what we do and make it easier for insurers to work with us.
The reality is we are the leaders in this space.
But staying ahead requires constant evolution. Innovation never stops.
To continue being recognised as the leaders and experts in this field, we rely on every single person in this team to help shape the future of IMM.
The next five years will be bigger.
- More claims.
- More insurers.
- Better technology.
- Greater national influence.
- And a much bigger impact on medication safety across Australia.
What we have built in five years is something special.
But the most exciting part is that we are only just getting started.
Cheers to the next 5 years!
